What is tagua?

Tagua is an ivory palm, Phytelephas aequatorialis harvested in South America. Like true ivory, tagua is dense and creamy yellow in color, and it can be carved and worked into jewelries.

An adult tagua tree can reach up to 20 metres (65 feet) in height and will typically bear several large, knobby wooden fruits. When cracked open, these fruits reveal several hen’s egg sized tagua nuts. These nuts are the seeds of the tree. The seeds can be used either to propagate another tagua tree or they can be carved into vegetable ivory products. The tagua tree is considered to be help in preserving the South American rainforests that have now been long under threat.

THe jewelries I sell are made by women in Ecuador and they are paid at a fair price. The goal is to empower women in Ecuador and to help them develop the cooperative we found with them there.
